This shapefile contains ACORN classifications all of the postcode area polygons intersecting Buckinghamshire or the Buckinghamshire Primary Care Trust (PCT) administrative areas.
A Classification of Residential Neighbourhoods (ACORN) shows the distinct groups of people that live within Buckinghamshire. The county is made up of 10 ‘groups’ of households (which may alternatively be aggregated to 5 ‘categories’ or disaggregated to 56 more detailed ‘types’) whose residents all have very different demographic characteristics and lifestyles, which generally means that each group has different service needs. A further classification set named ‘Bucks ACORN Groups’ (with 10 groups) has also been created. The original 10 ‘ACORN Groups’ classifications have been slightly altered to form these 10 ‘Bucks ACORN’ Groups that are defined as best representing the range of socio-demographic groups in Buckinghamshire.
The 10 ‘Bucks ACORN’ Groups are:

2. Villages with Wealthy Commuters
3. Well-off Managers
4. Affluent Greys
5. Flourishing Families
6. Urban Professionals

16/03/2011 - Due to the 'INCOMEBAND' field causing problems in MapViewer in displaying the '£' sign, another field will be created where the '£' sign will be removed.
The original ACORN Classifications are assigned to full postcodes, which by their nature will include a number of households with varying socio-demographic structures. Therefore any ACORN classification is designed to represent the dominant socio-demographic type of the postcode, as such the exact demographic of any individual inclusive household has the potential to vary slightly from the postcode classification.
Some postcodes are labelled as vertical postcodes. Vertical postcodes occur where more than one postcode is assigned to a building (often with many floors) such as a block of flats. In this case the postcode area polygon is shown as a small square polygon in the GIS shapefile. Only one of the ACORN classifications associated with the polygon’s multiple postcodes can be shown (with a symbolised colour) in the 2D GIS polygon layer. Often the ACORN classification will be uniform throughout a building’s multiple vertical postcodes, however there are some cases where they vary.
The full postcode ACORN dataset used to classify these polygons by ACORN category/group/type/income also included older postcodes that sit within Buckinghamshire but are not included in the current postcode polygons GIS shapefile. This extra data may be used to check the ACORN classifications of customers whose postcodes are not in the current polygon dataset.
The previous set of ACORN data obtained for Buckinghamshire was from April 2009 - this new dataset supersedes the 2009 dataset.
